Prior to joining Apogenics, Inc. in 2008, Derek served in various capacities in the hemophilia community including: Director of Administration at the National Hemophilia Foundation, Finance Director of the Gulf States Hemophilia Diagnostic & Treatment Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Associate Director of Healthcare Policy at Centeon (now CSL Behring). Derek helped establish and served as contracted Executive Director and General Counsel to the Hemophilia Alliance, Inc., an organization representing Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTCs) that participate in the Public Health Service’s Section 340B Drug Discount Program (the “340B Program”).
Derek has 20+ years of extensive experience working with government pricing programs, with particular expertise in the 340B Program. Derek also has substantial knowledge of Medicare Part B and Medicaid reimbursement, as well as the federal Medicaid Drug Rebate Program. In Derek’s regulatory practice, he advises clients on how to stay in compliance with various federal laws and regulations including anti-kickback laws and guidance related to the 340B Program. Derek has worked extensively with hospitals and universities on federal grants management, and program income calculation and reporting. He presents nationally at conferences on government pricing programs, specialty pharmacy trends and conflicts of interest in healthcare.
Derek has served on various committees of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the National Hemophilia Foundation, and has written several articles on the 340B Program. Derek was recently appointed to a two year term (2016 – 2018) as a member of the National Institute of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Advisory Committee on Sickle Cell Disease. Derek is a recipient of the 340B Coalition Lifetime Achievement Award. He is licensed to practice law in Texas and Washington, DC.
